Learning Outcomes

By completing this session, you will be able to:

  • Apply UKMEC guidance when selecting contraceptive methods in women with multiple risk factors such as obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, smoking or age over 45

  • Evaluate the risks and benefits of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-Provera) in women with cardiovascular or bone health risk factors and identify appropriate alternative contraceptive options.

  • Assess the role of drospirenone-only contraception (Slynd), including indications, counselling points, bleeding patterns and monitoring requirements.

  • Identify safe contraceptive options in the postpartum period, particularly in women with a history of venous thromboembolism.

  • Apply current guidance on emergency contraception and hormonal contraception in patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists such as tirzepatide.

  • Recognise and investigate irregular bleeding in women using hormonal contraception, including potential pharmacokinetic interactions and appropriate contraceptive optimisation.

  • Integrate menopause management and contraception considerations when counselling perimenopausal women experiencing vasomotor symptoms.

Dr Manju Navani

Dr Manju Navani is an experienced General Practitioner with a specialist interest in women’s health, menopause and contraception. She is British Menopause Society (BMS) accredited and is actively involved in developing local clinical guidelines to support evidence-based menopause care. Dr Navani regularly contributes to the education and training of healthcare professionals, helping clinicians confidently manage menopause and contraception in primary care.
